The character Thor is originally from ancient Norse mythology. He is the celebrated god of thunder, often going by his other name, “Thunderer” (Sheppard). In 1962, Marvel Comics’ Stan Lee and Jack Kirby reinvented Thor to use as a godly superhero (“Thor”). While this new interpretation of Thor has some stark contrasts to his ancient self, Thor is one of the best know characters from Marvel’s Comic universe.
In the comics, Thor was born in a cave in Norway (“Thor : Thor Odinson”). He is the son of Odin and the earth goddess, Gaea . Odin took Thor from earth to be raised in Asgard, the magical realm populated by super-beings. While Thor was in line to become Odin’s successor as the king of Asgard, he became overly pompous, almost causing a war with Asgard’s rival, The Frost Giants. In reaction to this, Odin banished Thor to earth, stripping him of his powers, his mighty war-hammer, Mjolnir, and even his memories of Asgard. Thus, Thor became human, and went by the name Donald Blake (“Thor: Thor Odinson”).
As Donald Blake, Thor became a successful Doctor, and developed a relationship with one of his nurses, Jane Foster. A day did come, though, when Odin needed Thor to fight, and through a series of manipulations, enlightened Donald Blake as to his true identity. Eventually, the alias “Donald Blake” was dropped.
